The story behind the Nicawana surf helmet hat
I burned out. Then I got burnt.
Why Silvia created a surf hat with an impact insert
I left a job that was eating me alive. Burnout taught me one thing: protect yourself, or you don't last.
Sun damage and a board to the head, on the same surf trip
Then I went to Nicaragua to surf. And I got burnt again, this time by the sun. That same trip, I took a board to the head.
Same lesson. Twice.
Look at surfers. Brown, strong bodies. Faces like grandparents. I love this life. I just refuse to pay for it with my skin. There had to be another way.
Head or face: the problem in a crowded line-up
And the line-up keeps filling up. In Ericeira I paddle for the peak and I'm not looking at the wave, I'm looking at the boards. When I wipe out I cover my head. Always. But then my face is open, and what really scares me is a fin in the eye. Going blind.
Two hands. Head or face. You have to pick.
What the surf helmet hat does, and what it doesn't
So I made the hat I needed.
What it does
UPF 50+ fabric and a hard brim 360° for the sun.
A removable insert that absorbs board and wipe-out impacts, so the hat takes my head and my hands are free for the rest of me.
What it doesn't do
It's not a helmet.
It doesn't cover the back of your head, and it's made for waves up to 2 m.
It just means I can look at the wave again.
Your skin and your brain are the only ones you get.
I fixed my life the same way I fixed the hat: I moved to the sea, where I can protect my mind.
